A Review of Yai Tam Hai Lan Khai, a Rare Traditional Thai Dessert Shop with a Centuries-old Recipe

Today, as Ryoiireview members have an opportunity to taste rare traditional Thai desserts from a centuries-old recipe, we would like to invite people in the new generation to try it.

Granny ‘Somchai Taedolah’ is a person who inherited a century-old recipe of Thai desserts from her ancestors. She has been familiar with Thai desserts and helped her mom make the desserts since she is around 16-17 years old. Granny is the eldest sister and the 2nd generation of the shop. Now, Granny Somchai transferred the recipe to the grandchildren so some of them help her make desserts and others enjoy selling them. All of these are the origin of the dessert shop’s name ‘Yai Tam Hai Lan Khai (Granny Does, Grandchildren Sell)’

Today, as Ryoiireview members have an opportunity to closely see how to make Thai desserts, we can feel that her family warmly welcomed us and know that all of the Thai desserts are delicious and memorable. Hence, those who have never tasted the Thai desserts of this shop must try them!

Desserts and their Prices

Although the desserts are sold in the center of the city near BTS Skytrain, their prices are still reasonable and cheap so children and students can buy them without any worries. In each round, the restaurant will make about 15-20 kinds of Thai desserts depending on the ingredients of each day, namely, Thai pandan coconut sweet pudding, Thai taro pudding with coconut topping, and toddy palm cake with starting price of 25 baht.

Granny and her grandchildren will start making the desserts at around 4 a.m. by cutting banana leaves and pandan leaves. The popular desserts that they always make in large quantities are ‘Steamed Flour with Coconut Filling’ (1,000-1,500 pieces per day), ‘Thai Steamed Banana Cake’ (300-500 pieces per day), ‘Bundled Boiled Rice’ (400 pieces per day), and others packed in around 1,000 boxes.

Steamed Flour with Coconut Filling (a Small Set with 9 Pieces (75 Baht) and a Big Set with 15 Pieces (125 Baht))

Steamed Flour with Coconut Filling of this shop is special because how they wrap it is not the same as others. The shop will choose long mature shiny banana leaves to wrap the dessert uniquely without using coconut leaves. Its filling is sweet coconut which is stirred with flour and wrapped with stir-fried coconut milk. Surprisingly, it’s so popular that the dessert is always sold out first and can be kept for 3 days in the refrigerator.
